Claws, Tails, Skulls, Teeth & Crafts

Back in I wrote a post about how to clean up animal bones. Over the last three years that has always been my most popular post on the site, but I have learned a lot since then so in October I wrote this new page, all about cleaning bones. You don't need to clean every bone you find. If it has been out in the open, doesn't have any soft tissue on it, and doesn't smell, then it is pretty much clean.

It is rare to get diseases from any kind of bone like this. This is my personal guide. This is what I have found out from five years of bone collecting.

Other people might have different ideas but these are the ones which work for me. There are eight good and two bad techniques to clean bones, but I have missed out one of the good ones because it was told to me as a secret.

A lot depends on what state the bones are in at the start. Are they dry with no soft tissue, do they have some flesh attached, or is the animal recently dead?

Choose from the top row, then look down the column to see which are good ways to clean the bones. There is more about each method below.Bone magick: the usage of bones is helpful for necromancy and animal magick, as they help to build a bridge from the earthly plane, thus facilitating your communication with ancestors or spirit animals. It also allows you much easier to draw from their qualities and powers. However, I find it absolutely necessary to state in this article as well, that animal remains should be treated with respect, they should be ethically acquired and I do not encourage or endorse the harming of animals in any way shape or form.

From my personal collection: bones, fangs, seashells, and a crab claw. These locations are of spiritual significance to me, which is why I believe they are very potent and work well especially in ancestor work. On the same note, I do no encourage the use of human skulls or bones, especially since most of them are acquired as the result of grave robbery, something that I personally find unnecessary, disrespectful, and disgusting.

Also, human bones may contain impure energies which will not serve anyone, unlike animal bones which are imbued with pure and natural energy. Human remains contain energetic imprints made by the intentions, will, and even reactions of those they belonged to. This makes them impure as opposed to animal remains which are attuned to the natural flow of things.

In animal magick, bones and skulls can work as effigies or fetishes that represent the genus of a spirit animal and they can be inhabited in order to facilitate communication or draw energy from the spirit animal during ritual. Unless your own will is to bind and control human spirits, working with human remains may be disruptive. For these reasons, this article is focused only on animal remains which are ethically acquired and re-purposed, and not on human remains or animal entrails.

In animal magick, bones work as fetishes or effigies of your spirit animals. Fetishes or effigies are usually inanimate objects which can be either manufactured or occur naturally. They are representative of supernatural powers, such as spirits.

Animal bones, which occur naturally, are representations of their respective spirit animals and when they inhabit them they become active. Upon summoning or invocation, a spirit animal may inhabit such an effigy for communion or spellwork. It ties them to the earthly plane, thus facilitating your communication with them and allowing you to draw from their qualities and powers.

Likewise, in ancestor work, the animal spirits inhabiting the bones will work as messengers or guardians during ancestral communion or ancestor work. Spirit animals will protect you from unpleasant spirits, they will guard your sacred space and help guide you towards ancestral spirits that will serve you. Drawing symbols or sigils unto the bones help bind the spirit animal to the earthly realm and consecrates the animal remains as a home for said spirit.

To bind a spirit animal to an animal bone, you may decorate the bones with symbols or words that are relevant to the spirit animals you wish to call upon. They may also be primeval symbols of life and death, that together may reconcile the gap between the two by creating a space for the spirit animal to come into. Another common practice throughout the world is the reddening of bones. This beginners guide to animal bone identification has been written by Chris Faine and is one of a series of introductory guides published by the community archaeology network, Jigsaw.

Animal bone is one of, if not the, most commonly recovered finds material from archaeological sites.

Identifying the full range of species that you could potentially find on an archaeological site requires access to a comparative collection and hours of study gaining experience with archaeological material.

Whilst this is beyond the scope of a short introduction, having the knowledge to identify the most commonly found species can be of great help on site. This guide will hopefully enable you to distinguish between human and animal bones and broadly distinguish between cattle, horse, sheep, pig and dog remains. Distinguishing between human and animal bones whilst still on site is important for many reasons, not least of them legal burial licences etc.

Whilst identifying complete bones seems relatively simple, fragmentary remains can be surprisingly difficult. The following differences can help you make the correct identification:. Shapes and sizes of most domestic breeds have changed considerably over time with the differences between modern and older breeds being often quite pronounced. For example the difference in average height at the shoulder between Iron Age and Modern cattle can be as much as 40cm!

Fragmentary cattle and horse remains are often confused given their similarity in size but there are several elements that demonstrate significant differences aside from the horns! Figure 1 shows the skulls of the two species. The most important differences to note are the much smaller skull vault in horses compared to cattle and the difference jaw shape.

The front of the skull will be much flatter and broader in cattle as well. Figure 1: Cattle L and horse R skulls. If teeth are available then identification is much easier, with teeth of the two species particularly molars being very different. These can be seen in Figure 2. As one can see horse teeth are much squarer in profile and plan compared to cattle teeth with a radically different enamel fold pattern. Figure 2: Cattle and horse 1st molars lower.

Cattle and horse long bones also show very distinct differences especially but not exclusively femora and metapodials. Figure 3 shows cattle and horse femora. The most apparent difference in these bones is the much larger muscle attachments at the proximal end of the horse femur compared to cattle horses run faster than cattle!

Figure 3: Cattle left and horse right femurs. Differences in metapodia are also a result of physiology. Cattle belong to the group of mammals known as artiodactyla, even toed hoofed mammalswhereas horses belong to the group Perissodactyla odd toed hoofed mammals.

As one can see in Figure 4, cattle metacarpals are formed of two fused bones leaving a groove between the two. Horse 1st metacarpals consist of a single bone.

Figure 4: Cattle and horse 1st metacarpals. Cattle and horse astralagi are also distinctive see Figure 5. Horse astragali have a different shape to most ungulates due to the structure of the lower limb. Figure 5: Cattle left and Horse right astragali. Figure 6 shows the differences in sheep and pig skulls.

The most notable difference is the much higher and flatter skull vault in pigs compared to sheep. Note also the different profile of the mandible. Luckily pig teeth are the most distinctive of the domestic mammals. Figure 6: Sheep top and Pig bottom skulls.Ok Its getting close to Halloween, and thats my favorite holiday to decorate for. I really like skeletons and such, but im really not into obtaining real bones at least not my own and the fake ones can cost a good bit.

So I decided to make my own. Now this instructable will show you how to make the molds so you can make your own bones over and over. Im not going to show you how to make an entire skeleton, but with these steps you should be able to make the rest of the molds on your on. By the way, this is my first Instructable so if you find it interesting, I would truely appreciate any comments.

Ok, theres not too much needed to make a mold. Dont use a regular paint brush. Ill explain later. Ok, for this instructable, ill be using a jaw bone.

You can use any thing.

Bone Magick: Or Using Bones, Fangs, Feathers, Claws, and Shells in Animal Magick and Ancestor Work

Iv even casted a human skull. Im going to show you how to do a simple cast. This will capture the detail on all the sides except the very bottom. The reason I do this is because it makes it so much easier when you remove the mold. Also, for this mold I used regular potters clay. However iv also used the modeling clay that doesn't dry out and It worked just fine. Its your preference. First thing, take your clay and make a flat base, about an inch wider than the bone.

Next build clay up around the bone until there are no gaps between the bone and the clay base you made. The picture below was taken days after I made my mold, so the clay dried up and receded.

You really dont want a gap because it causes problems when you go to de-mold. Simple enough, follow the directions on your latex container. The stuff I bought said to apply 6 coats. I applied 11 to be safe. All items sold on this website are reproductions replicas. No real or natural bone material is available on this site. Gunshot Wound Set. Pathology and Trauma Femur Set.

Natural History Gift Ideas.Images and tales of giant fossilized human remains known as the Canaan or Nephilim skeletons have been circulating on the internet since at least The viral stories usually announce some version of a "major discovery" of a giant skeleton or skeletons in the Mediterranean or the Middle East —something the mainstream media somehow has failed to report.

That's because the images—convincing as they may appear— are fakes. According to the Old Testament, the Nephilim were "sons of God," a race of gigantic beings who were the offspring of human women and fallen angels. They lived in the ancient land of Canaan—which today stretches from Lebanon to Israel—and were wiped out in the Great Flood.

Tales of giant remains are no recent phenomenon. More than years ago, businessman George Hull barnstormed the U. Cotton Mather, a noted Puritan minister and writer in the late s, touted large bones as evidence of the Nephilim that later proved to be the remains of a mastodon. But there's a reason this " news " hasn't been reported widely. The photos circulated as "evidence" of the Nephilim giants have all been debunked.

Digital technology like Adobe Photoshop has made the practice of altering photos relatively simple. However, it's still fairly easy to spot a doctored photo. A blow-up of this image with brightness and contrast enhanced reveals unnaturally dark "shadows" around the large skull. Also, the shadows from the skeleton fall more or less toward the camera, while the worker's shadow falls due left, suggesting that elements of two different photos were combined.

The skull in this image is marked by incongruously bright highlights on the teeth and the edges of the gaping temple wound. Although Photoshop can bring out details that are hidden in shadow, such clarity in this very dark region of the skull would be impossible to capture under such harsh daylight conditions.

This viral image serves as clear proof that Photoshopping took place. It was created by inserting an outsized human skull into a photo of a University of Chicago dinosaur dig in Niger. If you look at a blow-up of the doctored image, the skull appears flattened and unnatural and one of the workers actually appears to be standing on it! This image of a map purporting to show where the remains of the Nephilim giants were found began circulating aroundaccording to Snopes.

David Emery. David Emery is an internet folklore expert, and debunker of urban legends, hoaxes, and popular misconceptions. He currently writes for Snopes. Who Were the Nephilim? Giant Skeletons Tales of giant remains are no recent phenomenon.

This totally unexpected find furnishes proof of the existence of 'Nephilim. It is generally believed that most of these Giants came about when the fallen angels had union with earthly women. Note the incredible size of the skull There were giants on earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bear children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
